The people of Austin pride themselves in being eccentric and different. "Keep Austin Weird" is considered to be the local motto, as it not only represents Austin's diversity, but also meant to boost the support of the local and independent businesses.
One of the most interesting places is the O. Henry House Museum that hosts the annual O. Henry Pun Off, where contestants battle against each other in a massive pun contest. Other unique events include Eeyore's Birthday Party, Carnaval Brasileiro, and Spamarama.
If these events seem to be a little too outrageous for you, do not fret. Austin also provides a variety of other events that may be reminiscent of other city events as well. For example, a local popular tradition is the Zilker Park's Christmas lights display, where the Park Tree is decorated with elaborate lights surrounded by light trails throughout the park.
Austin's official slogan is The Live Music Capital of the World, and this city certainly lives up to it. Austin has a pumping live music scene that has more music venues per capita than any other city in the entire U.S. 6th Street is home to a number of night clubs and an annual film/music/interactive festival called South by Southwest. Some other musical events include the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and the Urban Music Festival.
Austin also hosts the annual Austin Film Festival that draws film fans from all over the world, and has been the film location for a number of large motion pictures. Some of these movies include Man of the House, Spy Kids, Miss Congeniality, Road Trip, and How to Eat Fried Worms.
To keep up to date with what is going on in the world, newspapers are delivered to every home and every business within certain zip codes in Austin. The main daily newspaper is the Austin American-Statesman, while The Austin Chronicle is sent out weekly, and the University of Texas publishes the student paper The Daily Texan. There are also a number of smaller newspapers that the locals enjoy.
Whether you're looking for something fresh and exciting, or if you prefer the traditional ways of life, Austin will be able to provide you with both regardless of what zip code you may find yourself in.
